My bridge was also at an angle. I ordered a replacement bridge, and exchanged the saddles from the damaged bridge. This kept me from having to cut new slots. Of course, if you're going to change to a 12 saddle bridge, you won't be able to swap saddles.

I have been in a praise band for the last dozen years or so (I know, long gap) I never played a Ric because I was afraid I'd fall in love. Kinda like why I don't test drive cars I can't afford!
Ok, I bought this thing off ebay a few weeks ago. I took it to erik's Guitar ship here in the valley, and had the action raised (it was WAY too low), and electronics tested. The fellow I bought it from miswired it so Erik brought it back to stock. It now plays like a dream!
I have some questions. Anyone put a brass nut on a Ric? I'm afraid too with all the sustain it already has. It seems Ric's should be played with a very light touch? When I dig in (as on my jazz copy), the speakers sound like they are "farting", which is usually a sign of overdriving. There is also a slight "fuzz" even when playing lightly. It may be standard but I don't have anything to compare it to.
Has anyone ever mentioned the lacquer on the neck? That is what they do to fretless basses and I thought it was for sustain. Anyone else agree that some of the sustain comes from the lacquered neck. I know you get more sustain from the big bridge, and the neck through, but I think the lacquer also adds. Am I Nuts?
Anyway, I LOVE my bass. 87 may not be the best year, but it's got that Ric sound!

I've had it precisely 25 hours (I'm sure I'll stop counting in a few days ), but it feels like I've owned it much longer - it 'fits' me beautifully. Needed a slight truss rod tweak to bring the action to where I like it, but otherwise it was perfect out of the box.
Looking forward to being a more active participant here. Now the saving starts for a 380!

Nigel: I had the first one made(March 1992), now in the hands of another happy home..it was #383/1000.
I think a total of five were produced, although I never saw a factory figure...
Now, two things about this post; I was going by my "stagename" in The Eggmen, "Nigel". And, in John's reply he says he had the first lefty CS, #383, made in March 1992. Looking at my CS certificate it says mine is #271 and made November 1st, 1991. Hmm...

Here is mine, from March 2006, in the "Wanted" section. It's funny how little I knew about Ricks then. After this I bought a forumite's '87 4003JG (a beauty with a nice slim neck), then jumped on the DCM bandwagon, and now I enjoy my 4003 along with the variety of other non-Rick basses I've bought in recent months.

First of all, this is my first post to this group. I'm glad I found it! Great info here.
Basically, I am a 42 year old software engineer in the USA that also enjoys playing the bass, and am really just a novice compared to most of you I would think. I have an old Seiwa Japanese bass that I've had for about 18 years. In the past 2 years I have been playing more, and now I would like to get a better bass. I have always loved the Ric sound (big Yes fan in my youth, and still today), so I have started looking around for a 4001 that is not perfect but does not need alot of work. I don't care how it looks as long as it plays great. Any information to help me out in this search would be much appreciated. I see alot of late-70's models on eBay, but I could use some help to figure out what price makes sense for what I am looking for.
Also, if you consider that I'd like the best Ric "Chris Squire-like" sound possible, than any help with models would be great. I have read mixed reviews about the quality of the 4001CS. You guys can probably tell it like it is when it comes to model history.

This guy ended the auction early for some reason, but it had hit around $600 before he ended it. This seems like what I am looking for. Does it seem reasonable that I should be able to find something like this for $600-800? I wrote the guy and he said it he used it in a band for years and had just gotten something new. What do you guys think this one is worth (assuming it plays fine)?
Any help for my quest for a great starter Ric 4001 series would really be appreciated. Maybe I could even be talked into a 4003 if it makes more sense for what I am looking for.
