Great vid taken from Beloved Invaders DVD originally only issued in Japan.

On the album that they did their version on Bob they called it The Cruel Surf.

Mike Maxfield of The Dakotas told me that writing that was his pension.

It sounds live to me, including out of tune guitars and very loud drums, pretty hard to fake synched drums and it just sounds live, maybe it was touched up but I believe it's live. I think the video is a little out of synch with the performance. Think of this, when bands lip syched back them they used to play very softly so as to stay in time with the piped in music, that drummer is really bashing, you couldn't do that and stay in time with a recording.
I have the Dakotas version, they were excellent musicians.

I think the sound on the Beloved Invaders film is live, but the sync is pretty haphazard. Nokie Edwards had the greatest tone during that period, which he apparently got with his guitar, amp, and fingers! The attack sounds like nobody else.

The sound was probably recorded on 1, 2 or 3 tracks, making repairs pretty unlikely.

It is a bit out of sync, no problem.
But I can not see someone playing the guitar's low (open E or A?) notes.
On my Ventures' Greatest the song is missing.

from the same show I think, these guys could rock. This was always one of my favorite tunes they did, listen to Mel's foot.

Doubt it would bo on Ventures greatest Wolfgang it was originally on the Surfing album I think from memory, I really like The Ventures too have something like 60 albums by them.

George is correct about Japan, they still tour there every year yet they are in their 70's now I think I am correct in saying.

Mel Taylor passed away and his son Leon is now on Drums.

They have never been to UK and I once debated with Frank Allen of The Searchers that these guys would be great on a package 60's tour that has become popular here in UK.

He disagreed but still convinced that they would go down a storm.

For all you guitar freaks Ventures for a long while were associated with one make of guitar, anyone know which

Well they had a sponsorship deal with Mosrite, but from what I've read they didn't actually *play* them more than strictly necessary! Don Wilson played/plays a Jazzmaster, Bob Bogle a Precision and Nokie Edwards a custom made one, the name of which I've forgotten. And Jerry McGee I think plays Stratocasters pretty exclusively. More than you ever wanted to know...

I have always preferred The Dakotas' version of The Cruel Sea which featured George Martin on piano, with the surprise last chord being a major.
