He sure was. Bummer! I saw him here live at a jazz club in around 1990--just brilliant. He had it going on. Sort of a mini percussion symphony, but classy and restrained. RIP.
Here is where I hide my music:

Certainly a great loss, not just for Jazz but for music in general. I used to love listening to the old "Rich VS Roach" recording; some serious virtuosity there!!

One of my favorite Roach recordings is "Money Jungle" with Ellington and Charlie Mingus. Not your typical Duke Ellington record and the three of those cats together was just plain awesome!

R.I.P.

Just picked up "The Quintet" at Massey Hall a few weeks ago, and it was my first exposure to his incredible drumming. Huge, huge figure in the world of music.

There's a jam going on somewhere tonight.
What do you mean the Bass is too loud???

OK,I'll admit it.
When I saw the name, my first thought was that it was Hal Roach (the filmmaker).
Who, after all, did live to be 100 and died (fairly recently) in the 90s.
Sorry.

He was unbelievable, love those jazz drummers.
I had Money Jungle and didn't like it though, thought it sounded like Ellington and Mingus were on different planets (they were).
Is the Quintet, the one with all the original bebop guys with Mingus playing bass?

Yup... Parker, Dizzy, Mingus, Roach and Bud Powell. AWESOME set... bad sound quality... VERY drunk performers. Worth the money!

Not JUST drunk, Bob...let's keep the record straight...

Max was the best, musically, politically and socially...came up from the streets and brought the goods every time he played. I think he started with Ellington at the age of 16. He invented bop drumming...which is, like, Jesse Owens not only beating everyone at the Olympics but introducing a new sport while he was there...

It's a better world for this cat having spent some time in it...

(ps...attention, 'rockers': this guy is Bill Bruford's favorite drummer...if he's not in your collection, you're missing some vital information...)
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...
