4003S-5 questions

Post by cheyenne »

fretless or fretted ? which is more desireable ? Also standard , discontinued finish, black trim option , ???? Does it matter on the used market ?? you cant seem to get a new 5-stringer from Rickenbacker right now , and they dont make the 4003S-5 anymore. How do the prices vary ?

I've never heard of a fretless 4003S/5. I think they are probably the same as the other Rics, the more rare the finish the more desirable and expensive. One just went for $1750.00 and there is another one on Ebay right now up over $1500.00, it's Red with black trim (I think).

I haven't heard of a fretless 4003S/5 either. If one was made, I'd want it.

Jeff, that one belongs to Mark Rowe, a fellow Forumer, and he also has a 4003/S5 FL which can be seen at his website:

Mark notes in the text that RIC told him that they "... made a few fretless 5-string basses ...", so there's hope for you, Joey!

Gary, thanks for bringing that to the forum. Unfortunately they are so rare, if I found one it would probably cost a small fortune. That one looks like Brad's in a fretless version.
I wish guitar companies wouldn't manufacture stuff I like in small quantities.
I wonder if RIC will make any fretless 4004Cii5 basses.

If you checked out Mark Rowe's website, I realized he is a FRETLESS 12 string bassist! Now, I too play a 12 string, but to play it fretless? I take my hat off to Mr. Rowe!
