Bored of the Rings was a great riposte to Tolkein's excess. Doug Kenney, co-author (who wrote it while he was at Harvard in the late '60s), went on to later fame as the producer of "Animal House". A few short years later, he died falling off a cliff in Hawaii. To this day, nobody knows if it was the wind, of if he jumped. Harold Ramis said that he fell while looking for a place to jump.
“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”
