Good info, but GREAT imagery. The last 50 years in a nutshell.
Mark, no doubt the guys writing that Marlboro ad (incidentally, "Marlboro Man" was #4 on the AdAge list!) as well as the guys writing the VW ad were doing their part for cigarette consumption.
New TV series: "Madmen" on AMC. "The good old days on MadAve." Recommended.

Great posts today.
Mark beat me to the point that it wasn't as rosey and ethical as we remember. As it was and always will be.....
What amazes me is with the power of ideas, we could have any reality within the laws of physics we want, and we've chosen this one to endorse with our lives.
I am not cynical and don't mean that negatively, it just makes me shake my head and smile. I have simplified my life to a few things; my universe and my energies go to my wife and kids, the people around me who impress me, the few baubles and hobbies I enjoy, and my sibs and Dad.

I think Mark's example could easily predate the connection between smoking and cancer, which became fact upon publication of the Surgeon General's report in mid '63. The graphics on that ad (and the campaign) say "early 1950s" to me.
Remember--radio and print advertising during the '40s stated that "more doctors smoke Lucky Strike than any other brand!" This was not to counter any cancer connection (there wasn't any at that time), but to say, in effect, that if educated men smoked this brand, shouldn't you, too? (Or, "ask the man who smokes them".)
Menthol cigarettes were initially touted as being good for coughs and colds.
In any event, my points were meant to address dignity in advertising as an indication of respect for a customer.

Roughly 1965-8 as I recall.

They got a lot of mileage out of that campaign, because at first (for several months, in fact) all you saw were the first letters of each word, with confusing punctuation. Nobody knew what it meant, and of course, lots of alternatives, not all fit for family consumption (well, is tobacco fit for family consumption? I ask...).
The ads, written in a brush script, said, simply:
LS/MFT
Pretty dopey, you arse me.
