Ok, here's an update I went to both GC;s today, and scored a B2RE demo for 199! I almost bought the Squier 70s vintage jazz for 249!
I am getting the SX jazz delivered tomorrow, so no sense in having two!! I will play around with pups with that baby. Who knows, I may sell the 4004. I did buy some Dr high beams for 8 bucks and will put those on today. As of now, I'm looking to maybe sell the SVT. I will set the B2RE up and A/B them until I decide. I used to have a B2RE so I think it may win out! Without a drummer,. I may need that instant attack from SS. I have enough variables now to at least test. And I should pt the VTVT mod in. Then I can adjust both pups independently,

Charly, other than the fact that my 4004CiiMG was fretless, it was a very similar bass to your 4004 with only one difference..it had concentric tone/volume controls for each pickup. My progressive bandmates found it to have a VERY bright sound, but my Ampeg Portabass cabs do have a horn in each one. I forget the tone settings, but I can say this about every Ampeg I've ever owned...they are bass heavy in the tone. I start flat and add treble and high first, otherwise I just can't get enough high end out of them. The unbuttoned high gains I have in the 4004CiiV63TR are particularly bright as I had it wired with 500K pots all around. You can still use your gold covers on unbuttoned high gains(you need to remove the button poles to keep the strings from hitting them)and they have more power than the more expensive toaster tops. You should come over some time Charly and do a comparo with my three very different 4004's.
"I will be getting a P/J clone sometime soon and that will be my primary backup, unless I like it better than the 4004!"
Charly,
I've been watching this thread with a lot of interest. You kind of freaked me out about my 4004Cii that I have on order. I look forward to your "taste test" results
As far as a P/J clone for a backup, if I MAY suggest....and I know everyone is going to laugh at me BUT, check this out.....not mine, and I WAS going to buy it to have a backup for my backup but someone beat me to it!

I paid $79.00 for mine delivered! I have to tell you, it's a great little bass. I had a set of Lindy Fralin pickups installed (the originals were just as good if not better than a Fender MIM bass but I wanted that VINTAGE Fender SOUND) and this thing is AMAZING. I THINK it was Bob Scott that suggested the Lindy's. They really have the "vintage" Fender tone down pat.
If you like a THIN neck, both in width as well as depth, a light body and 24 frets, you can't beat it. I beat the heck out of mine and it is an animal. It needed a REAL setup, I had to have the nut cut and the saddles as well. It's been kicked, knocked off of the stand, had the sliding van door close on it, and it keeps on ticking!
Yeah, I know it's a cheap China knockoff, (and my ONLY non-USA built guitar) but for those gigs where you don't want to have to keep an eye out for it, or if you HAVE to leave it in the trunk of the car for a short time, you might want to check it out.
MOST of them sell for under $100.00. The Lindy's are the most expensive part of the guitar. Add that to the cost of a setup, and for about $300.00 you have a sweet axe. If you can do the setup yourself, knock off another $60.00 and you're good to go!
Just a suggestion!
