Small tube amps for acoustic?

Post by charlyg »

I was looking for a small amp for the acoustic, and one of the GC drones said that feedback is an issue when playing acoustic through a tube amp, and that I should get a Solid state amp, pointing me to the Crate acoustic.

I have never heard of this before, isn't he blowing smoke?

Feedback is the most ridiculous reason to avoid a tube amp. Did he also warn you about naked Elvis impersonators that form in the output transformer and get clogged in the speaker cable? Did he also mention the space aliens that tend to inhabit the preamp tubes?

Only if a tube became microphonic would you experience anything like feedback (above that of a similar solid state circuit) and this isn't all that common.

(If the sales person's logic involved testing the theory on a high gain tube amp like a Soldano or something, it would tend to support his theory- unless tried with a similar high gain solid state amp.)

That said, though I have a strong preference for tubes in just about all things, I think you have a much better selection of over-the-counter SS acoustic amps.

I have an idea for a "troubadour" sort of an amp for doing acoustic or electric guitar and vocals, but it'll have to wait for some other projects to get done.

Charly, I've run my 730S through the little Champion 600 that I out took to SoCal 07. It seemed okay to my ears.

Well, it's 200 bucks for 5 watts. I'm just snooping around for a better deal is all.
