Very sad.

He was truly great in that fusion era, when WR had Jaco and were a fantastic band.

Yup, heard about his passing yesterday. I loved his playing with Cannonball & Nat Adderley; tunes like "Gemini" and "Jive Samba" are some of my favorites with Joe Z.. And what band hasn't played "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" at least once? A great talent that will be sorely missed.

75 is not that old these days. Last time I saw him (2003) I never imagined it would be the last.

Yeah a lot of great musicians die young, the road must be rough.

I saw WP when they were touring the "Sweetnighter" album...'74, I think. Wayne Shorter, Alphonzo Johnson, Eric (?), the drummer, and Dom Um Romao on percussion...they blew my mind...and Joe Z. was the Arp madman in charge of it all...I still don't think of what they were doing as 'fusion'...that stuff was pure jazz, something we don't have much of anymore...

So, in keeping with the theory of great people checking out in groups of three, there they are lounging together in the 'Green Room' of the Afterlife: Roach, Pavarotti and Zawinul...man, what a group of cats.

(Speaking of which, I wonder why they call it the 'Green Room'...I mean, I know what I like to do whenever I'm waitin' around in one...)
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...
