Tapewound guitar strings?

Post by dustymurphy »

I've read recently that Pete Townshend says that he only uses Rickenbacker's tapewound guitar strings on his 12 strings, and that they're the key to the early Who sounds with a Rickenbacker.

Does anybody know what he's talking about? I was born in '83, so maybe these were just before my time. I'm familiar with tapewound bass strings, but I've never heard of a tapewound guitar string.

Does anybody know more than I do?
Thanks!

They are simply flatwound strings.

Okay, cool. Thanks for clearing that up. The tapewound bass strings I've had experience with are black and have a very smooth feel a fairly dull sound (I bought an old bass once that came with a set on it.) so I had no idea.

I appreciate the help.
Thanks!
