Was black taping ever a 'stock' item?

Post by firstbassman »

Or a "custom option" like on this guitar?:

This particular one is for sale at a GC.

It looks a lot like a guitar Kantner used to play (and still has one).

Thanks.

Owner-done...

What a shame.
Got to start with one make it a 360/12.

But doesn't it seem odd that the taping is exactly like Paul's 366?:

I remember kind of liking it way back when.

Kantner's Ricks are all taped, from what I've seen. And the ones I've seen have a variety of patterns.

An exact copy of his taping is possible to execute with a bit of time and patience.

OK, a fan, I guess.
I called the GC to see if they knew the history of that guitar but a salesman at the time had no idea.

Sorry, Paul W, no:

"Kantner's Ricks are all taped, from what I've seen."

Thanks for expanding my vision, Mark!

If that picture was taken at RIC75's HOB concert, that might be a borrowed instrument.

No, sorry, Paul W, that MapleGlo is Kantner's own instrument.

Here he is playing it at "ChetFest:"

That's Pete Sears in the background playing bass.

He also has a FireGlo with no stripe:

In fact the only ones with stripes I remember are the one MG and the JG with the black pickguard.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what exactly is the purpose of taping a Rick? Is it just cosmetic or is there a purpose behind it?
Thanks!

It's like pin striping on a car. Makes it go faster. Image
