One problem for the Stones was that they were losing Jones for a while before he died...unless you consider staring into space while listlessly shaking maracas to constitute a kind of 'stage presence'...

For me, it's as if there's been 3 different bands with the name "The Rolling Stones" over these past 40-odd years. Although somewhat coincidental, I don't think it's directly attributable to the changing of one guitar player, but more a result of the changing musical landscape.
I know lots of folks prefer the 60s line up, myself included. But I attribute it more to the times: the whole electric guitar/rock band thing was still sort of a new and innovative thing. Plus, there seemed to be so much more "energy" when they performed back then; both in the band and in the crowd. Like this:
