Any Shadow owners here use black strings? I was looking at the Black Diamonds on juststrings.com
Dumb question: do they SOUND any different?

Thanks Kjames....what about them don't you like? I'm just curious....I've also been told by numerous bassists that the Pyramid Gold pure nickel flats are fantastic! Expensive, but fantastic....

My Sophie: ZJ 2935, October 1986.

I ordered a set of RIC black nylon tapewounds to put on my Shadow thinking she would look cool with those black strings but ended up putting the set on my 4001 Fretless and was pleased by the result.

Thanks Paul! I've ordered a set of the Pyramids Golds to try. "Sophie" is the oldest, so far...any others??

Chris-

Got me set of DR "Black Beauties".

I like 'em but I'm not a pro.

Just a hoarder...

Chris,

The strings have a muted sound almost like a dead string, I don't know if it's the coating or not that's causing the trouble. I've used the regular DR strings in the past without any problems, so I may have gotten a bad set. Also the last gig I played was in a very dark bar, you couldn't see the strings...just something to think about.

Those tape wound strings are damped by the coating, which cuts most or all of the overtones out. They are supposed to try to simulate the sound of an upright.

I don't know why but my '72 fretless sounds way more bright and twangy than my T-I flats equipped '86 and '98 4003 babies, both acoustically and amplified, with the RIC 45-105 nylon tapewounds on her. The twang and clank and high overtones are all there, even without the .0047 cap in the treble pickup signal path.

Bob is very correct about tapewounds simulating the sound of an upright. My '72 sure sounds like one, with her bright snappy attack and woody sustain in the notes, especially through a clean amp like my Ampeg B100R.
