I've wondered before, Alan, why 4005s didn't have the 330 style headstock, very similiar to the 2050.

The shoes are magnetic on my CS although its a fairly weak field.

I suspected it, thus my question.

Pete, on the CS, are the poles of the coil screws, buttons, or silver rods about 8mm in diameter? And if the rods, are they strongly magnetized?

Pete, If you ever need to, the shoes are easy to remagnetize using the hefty magnet on one or your cab's speakers. Apologies if I'm telling you something you already know but if not, have a look at my thread in the "Winding up with the Best" forum.

Thanks Steve. In fact I have a blown 15in spkr in a box under my desk right here and I have thought about doing that with the magnet.(The spkr is out of an Ampeg SVT15E cab and when I replaced it I got an uprated 500W Eminence.Its an upgrade I would recommend any SVT15 owners.)
The polepieces on the CS are flat not like the screw type on the originals and I will have to check but the magnet is quite strong I think.

Thanks for the tip, Pete. I have a 15E's. What do you notice as a difference?

Pete, then you have a reissue HS and the shoes are not magnetized. If you decide to put them on the 15" speaker's magnet, let me know how it turns out - will they accept any appreciable magnetism.

Those flat poles are Alnico5 magnet rods.

Cheers John thanks for the tips. I like the sound as it is but I will give it a thought and I will let you know if I go ahead.
Kevin, the thing I have noticed most is that I havent blown this one yet!
I play at pretty hight volume and the sound doesnt suffer from any speaker flap so thats the main benefit I think.
A funny thing happened though when I took out the old speaker.
I hauled the thing up two floors to my flat took the old chassis out but forgot to note which wire was positive.
So I unboxed the new speaker next morning but could I tell the difference in polarity?
Only one thing for it...I phoned Ampeg in America and again like an idiot I forgot about the time difference so the cleaner answered the phone!
Five hours later I got through to a charming young lady in the Ampeg service dept who had a wonderful southern accent...she must have thought I was an English eccentric phoning all that distance about a blue wire....and she would be right!
That reminds me...you know I should ring her about getting my castors lubricated.
