SVT amp for my Ricks
Moderators: rickenbrother, ajish4
Nah, those originals, I'm such a pack rat I kept mine and they are blue and tall, exactly like those. And yes I meant to rewire it for 220 (which is a real PITA) along with the recap job (which is another real PITA) which also takes some rewiring as they don't make them exactly like those anymore. I can't open my e-mail tonight for some reason Gil, as soon as I can I'll e-mail you some questions to ask, would be better coming from you, he would think there was more interest which might jack up his price if I sent them myself. Just e-mail me his answers.

Different transformers in the 80's versions. 70's are the best. IMHO. The seller is not that bad of a guy, I e-mailed back and forth with him several times, now he's just gotta lower the price a little, it seems legit. If it is it is a damn nice looking one for the age. Most cabs are all ripped up by that time, I pulled the tolex off both of mine and painted them black it was so bad.

The very early 80's MTI-made SVT's used leftover Ampeg US transformers, (mine does) and have the USA circuit with the 12DW7's, (mine does), but most of the MTI 80's SVT's will have the Japanese transformers with slightly lower B+ voltages, 12AX7 tubes in the preamp instead of 12DW7's, and all of the MTI-made ones have japanese components, which change the sound of course. When recapped and set up with modern caps and resistors, the MTI ones can sound just fine. They are a bit cheaper than the Magnavox made ones.

Yeah I had heard that about AC/DC too. Mine sounds really good even with the Japanese components, but I do have the US transformers too. A friend used to have a later MTI made one with 12AX7 circuit and Japanese transformers. He converted it to run 12DW7's and it didn't quite sound as good as mine, but was way better than new SVT's. For the price difference I think the MTI ones are a great deal.
