Storyville's tune Good Day For The Blues can usually pry me out of a blue mood.

Hmm.. When I'm bummed I usually put on KT Tunstall or Coldplay. KT in particular. Such as "Heal Over".

It's quiet songs like those that cheer me up. That one gives me goosebumps and make me tear up sometimes because it's so pretty. Dunno why but quiet little acoustic songs or little love songs cheer me up.

Now when I'm angry or happy it's big loud metal or music that I can sing loud or scream to. Or play my bass fast to.

How many of you have tried to augment instead of "fix" your down mood with music? Sometimes, what can be sweeter than revelling in it - at least for a little bit? I remember one night being very down, coming home late when it was very quiet in the house. I put on Joni Mitchell's Clouds, knowing that the last thing I really wanted was to be cheered up. I listened to the tune "The Gallery" over and over again, soaking in those beautifully sad harmonies. My angst was even't caused by any kind of the problems presented in the lyrics but it just seemed to sink me lower and lower into my funk - not sure why. I woke up feeling purged. Even now, I associate that song with being down although in listening to it since, it's never had the same impact as it did on that night.

I would maintain that it's hard to tell what effect any music is going to have on you in a given emotional state. I'm not sure I could find a piece that would just cheer me up if I was looking. To me, this is part of the fascinating beauty of music.

Well, thankfully, I don't ever actually need cheering up.

However, to help relieve the boredom of long car rides (when I'm by myself naturally) it should come as no surprise to the Forum that I BLAST the following CD (along with other live JA material):

I play The Stooges at night when I go to bed sometimes, especially Raw Power, seriously. I love that band, that album is the most powerful album ever recorded IMHO, beats everything if you like that kind of stuff. I like all their albums although the new one is taking some getting used to, the mix is terrible on it.
