Should I put this 8-Track tape on Ebay?

Post by octagon »

I was packing up a couple a hundred 8-Track tapes to sell to Half price books and I found this one which I had forgotten about. It's still sealed in plastic.Check out the picture,Johny Thunders has the Les Paul he gave to Malcolm McLaren(who gave it to Steve Jones).Think it is worth selling on Ebay? They have free listing fees this month.

Dang, Mitch! How can you even think of selling off your 8-tracks! I still have a little portable radio/8-track player and a few Yes tapes. For years I would wait for the fade and click when listening to the vinyl.

Sealed rock or jazz 8-tracks can do ok...If you had a Beatles sealed it would do very well. Many 8-track buyers look for large lots to buy..but hey give it a shot..you never know!

The problem I encountered with some old, sealed tapes was that the magnetic layer desintegrated and separated from the celluloid base tape. It resulted in brown-grey dust coming out of the tape machine, when cueing or fast forward/reverse. Image

Thanks for the posts!Peter,I have heard that about old 8-tracks that are sealed but I didn't know what to do with them.I used to collect them and I'ts a hassle because you have to take them apart and replace the foam or rubber wheels etc.Thats why I decided to get rid of them.

It is interesting, when I looked at the counter for each tape auction in the 1st 12 hours:

Focus had 8 visits

Vangelis had 7 visits

and the Dolls had 3027 visits

Stay away from 8-tracks. They self destruct after thirty years. After a while, cassette tapes will do the same.

I have an 8-track player, and a bunch of 8-track tapes that I bought very cheaply at estate sales/garage sales. I probably threw out more than I have due to them either being eaten up by the player, or the tape snapped, ar the tape started to get "garbley".

Sure, they're good for display, but in my personal experience, they are useless now. It's a shame.

Yeah 8 track was probably the worst technology ever invented. Cassettes aren't much better although they certainly sounded better than 8 tracks and didn't stop in the middle of In Da Gadda Da Vida and switch to the other side. Some people even questions CD's. longevity although I've never heard of any problems with them. Buy vinyl, if you take care of it it'll least forever and sounds better than CD's to boot.

Folks that buy large lots of 8 tracks know they will toss many. Also those who are really into rebuild the pads/rollers etc. There is a fairly large market for these tapes ...guys/gals w/60's cars and also others who are setting up rooms of that era. In particular, Quad 8tracks are worth $$$....I didn't get rich but recently sold more then 2500 8 track tapes to several buyers...true Paul W saw em...honest!

I sold a couple hundred 8-tracks today and also some players.I just keep a few.

Bidding is up to $0.06 on the Dolls tape and I have had 4481 visiters in just 17 hour. Why so many?I never got anywhere near that many people to look at one of my guitar auctions.
