They are nothing like humbuckers, Jerry. Jazzmasters sound like nothing else on the planet! And yes, they get a very surfy sound - maybe not as much as Jaguars, but I have more experience with Jazzmasters and they can nail it, especially with flatwounds (I use Chromes on mine, with the stock bridge).

Yeah, there really is nothing like the sound of these pickups. I guess if I had to compare, it's closer to a p-90 than a jaguar pickup. They have a lot more lows and mids than a regular strat-style single coil. Nice and mellow.
