Black inlays, right... :-) 21 frets, definitely. But as for the inlays, they simply are not there!

It looks like the inlays were removed and filled with a wood insert.

Hmm... Why would anybody want to do that?...

Looks like the outline of the inlays to me.
As if someone made the saw kerfs and then filled the kerfs with an inlay material.

Do I win a prize if I'm correct? Image

That seems about right to me Steve.

What it looks like on the higher res pic is that the inlays were scored, but never poured.

The grain is consistent in the board, across the inlay lines.

That looks like a genuine 1970 white finish as well.

I went back to the pic and enlarged it 300% and it does look like the cuts were made but then the inlay area dyed a tad darker. Yes, the grain is consistent down the fingerboard, but the inlay area looks darker, or "wet".

Thanks for the larger picture, Andy. I can now see that it is just cut and the wood continuous and not darker. I am en"lightened"! Image

Certainly an interesting 4001 - if original, then we see a 1970 4001 WH/BT 21 fretter with very unique neck markings.

I see the end of the fretboard in a slightly different place on almost all of them. Isn't the distance from the 21st fret center to the saddle on the G string really the question? If I get a chance I will measure mine and return.

James,

Good to see you still here.

How's that bass doing these days?

The bass is about the same...I'm getting a little dusty. Too much travel for work, not enough playing music.

I'm using medium to light gauge DRs. I think the E is a 0.95". So, nut to bridge is 33 5/16" on the G string. 21st fret to bridge is just a bit less than 9 15/16". Nut to 21 is about 23 5/16".

The upper wing is 13 3/4" at the glue line. The lower wing is 13 3/8".

Sorry for the poor quality pic. This one was KA015 which I bought for $500 in 1998 and sold for $500 on Ebay in 1999......It was rough though with wear on the board and body, changed treble pickup and tuners. The nameplate was original but missing the tip.

Boy, did they. It was sold to Lowdbass (Daryl Jones?) and he traded it to Bob Hynosky. I tried to find info on the bass but never had much luck. I found some of my old posts on the old archive of alt.rickenbacker.
