Putting the 4002 though its’ paces.

Driving down to this job, I thought about one issue that could be a huge problem, and sure enough it was.

I guess that the true design intent of the 4002 (low Z) was for a studio atmosphere and not live sound. After all it does state that in the sales brochure.

However I digress.

First just for ha ha’s, a bit about the three jobs. The Friday night and Saturday afternoon job was in a sleepy seashore south Jersey town (it was at the Fox Park Amphitheatre / Wildwood). It is now quiet, for all of the tourists are long gone this time of the year.

We played this same job last year where the Rascals were the headline. I did not realize how many hits they had, until I heard them live all at one time. Felix seemed liked a real pro. They did their sound check early in the day, the sound engineered save the program, and they were off the stage in 15 minuets.

This year there were several bands per day playing. I guess the most famous, was Johnny Rivers.

Again, he also had a lot of hits.

In my bass playing hack career I have met a lot of artist that were just so down to earth and a joy to be around. Then there are people like this(not Felix of course)…..enough said I guess.

A funny side story, I lost my digital camera with all of the shots of the event. As a one in million chance, I called the event planner to see if I dropped it as I was packing up. As it turned out the mayor of Wildwood NJ found the camera, and scrolled thru the pictures to see if he could identify who it belonged to. After he recognized all of the band photo’s, he turned it over to the event planer and is now overnight-ing the camera back to me. What good people.

So photo’s to follow later in the week.

Now down to it…

The monitor mix had the usual mixing consol with a buss split to the house mixer about 200’ away.

This is where my fear was realized. I was concerned about a large voltage drop to the boards. At home the low z did work perfectly. However, thru all the buss work and snakes, the monitor and the house board opps barely received a signal. The both of them were just as interested as I was in trying to get the low z working, but in the end, we just ran out of time.

I am just assuming that the issue was voltage drop.
Could it have been something else? I highly welcome all theories.

In any event, it was a great time. The organizers of the event could not do enough for us. Free hotels, food, transportation…you name it. Great family oriented people.

The Saturday night job was a private event with about 400 people there. I used the equipment as in the Rick Vault, pictured here. It worked perfectly. The amp mix was punchy and the low z direct to the board was super clean. I bumped up the low end eq just a bit, as we were running full range speakers without bass bins.

In conclusion, it is a great bass with a great studio low Z output. Playing it live with the low z, also prohibits me from using a cordless system. Another live issue is shutting the low z off at break time. It is wired directly to the output jack with no other way of shutting it off, other than to pod it off at the mixer.

I know without a doubt that Dave Pascoe was destined to become the "correct" owner for that bass.
