If you do decide to move off of the USA models, don't forget Fender Japan either. Prices are comparable to the higher end MIMs, and quality is exceptional. I've got a CIJ '57RI that I got for a littel over $600, and dropped a set of Fender Vin Noiseless p/ups in for another $100.

Right you are Bill, another viable option.

MIJ and CIJ Fender guitars are great instruments. I have several and they win hands down in quality over my MIA Strats (Made in America not Missing In Action).

I am not going to comment on the whole vibrato versus tremelo controversy. It is what it is.

Yes, the vibrato and tremolo controversy is, at least for some, on rather shaky grounds.

Actually, fellas, tremolo is a rapid right-hand picking motion technique (commonly on mandolin) that gives the impression of a long drawn out note ... similar to a bow on a violin.

There should be a video example of it somewhere here:

Well, Mark, that's tremolo picking. It's derived from the tremolo bowing effect of stringed instruments. Basically, think of it this way - Tremolo refers to a wavering in volume, vibrato refers to a wavering in pitch.

So, about that fender or fenderish guitar for under $800, I've got a couple that I'm considering. I'm looking at a Fender Highway One Strat, a G&L S-500, a Fender 60's Tele w/Bigsby(MIM I believe), and a Fender J. Mascis Jazzmaster(CIJ). Any other suggestions or offers?

Why would you go for a Highway 1 before those Classic Player Strats?

I'd stay away from the J. Mascis Jazzmaster too. Garbage pickups, tune-o-matic bridge, weird satin finish on the neck. Not very Jazzmaster-like.
