For those who like the walnut wings...

Post by sloop_john_b »

...and want to buy a new 4003 with them, beware!

I picked up a brand-spankin' new Amber Fireglo AFG from POTR on Wednesday - no wings. Ditto with Tony Cabibi's new AFG fretless, which was likely made the same week.

Puzzled, I called Kenny, who was equally puzzled and told me to ask on the RIC forum.

Well, you can imagine where I was told to go. http://www.rickenbacker.com/forum_view_ ... ut%20wings?

Here is a picture of mine, followed by a picture of another AFG with the wings:

It's disappointing, but not a huge deal. I might have Dale put the wings on for me eventually. I just want to make sure that anyone buying a new 4003 and expecting the walnut wings understands that they could potentially be in for a letdown (which I find odd, as every single other 4003 i've seen since the initial announcement had them, except Joey's 4003MB, which may have been produced before the announcement).

Otherwise, the bass is SO good. I gigged with it a few hours after I picked it up, and it was set up great from the factory. It's got a great neck, and the adjustable HiGains will come in handy. The finish is absolutely gorgeous - somewhere between Autumnglo and Monty Brown. One of the nicest Fireglo's i've seen.

John, just bite the bullit and drill the hole for the last TRC screw.

I think it looks better without the color contrast of the walnut.

I like it, too. I'd leave it as it is, but that's just me.

If it was a mapleglo I would have been bothered by the missing walnut but that bass looks beautiful. I know how you're feeling about that TRC hole, I have to do the same thing when I finally get my white Laredo back. That bass will have walnut wings though and look sort of like that bass that Dale did for Sean.

I say that you do have walnut there.

Look at the back of this LK.

Walnut is not always dark.

That is some pretty dark wood on the back of that Lemmy headstock, Dave

But I do have to say that we have a walnut tree in the backyard, and I have yet to see a walnut with wings anywhere in the yard....

The walnut ears on my mapleglo Cii/5 are not too dark either. Sort of like the back of that LK.

If these "plain" headstock necks were being worked out of the system, I would think they would have been finished Jetglo or Mid Blue. :(

The only reason that I say it is, look at the wood grain pattern on the top wing in John's picture (between the "R" and the "N" of the TRC). It looks like walnut.

I could be wrong.

Agreed.
