Re: Which List Am I On?
I think very highly of all the regulars on this forum. The day I have to start making a "foes list" will be the day I'll have no desire to post here anymore.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!

Well, if you insist, Alan...alanz wrote:How many of you have me on your "Foes" list?
Seriously, though, i'm with Joey.

Re: Which List Am I On?
We have no need for a foes list around here!

Re: Which List Am I On?
I was surprised to see this feature. A "Friends" list is even a bit extrasuperfluous, IMO.
My friends are all in my email program anywhoo, and "Foes"?
OK, it's wartime, so maybe there's a militaristic bent creeping in, but I won't be using this feature.

Extrasuperfluous. Wow. I like that word. No kidding - i've never heard it before and i like how it sounds.
From what i understood, this option allows highlighting messages from those who write something that may be interesting for you or who you like, and hiding messages from those who you'd prefer to ignore. But calling it "friends and foes"... i may be too conservative perhaps, but i can hardly associate these words with online communication. (Not to mention i don't have foes even in real life - or, at least, if there are some who consider me to be their foe, they've never told me that.)

Re: Which List Am I On?
Sheena, it's a nonsense word; not in usage in everyday English, just FYI.
Re: Which List Am I On?
I see. We have a lot of such words in our language - nonsensical, but some of them are used quite often in official speech. Some are also good for gloomy-doomy thoughtful songs. You know, those that perhaps make little sense but are filled with long strange words creating interesting alliterations and assonances.

Re: Which List Am I On?
Sheena, this word is nothing but humorous. It's a one-word oxymoron. Terms like, "military intelligence" are two-word oxymorons. Which gives me an idea for a new topic...see my "Reflections" section, anyone who has oxymorons to contribute...
Re: Which List Am I On?
Yeah, like "hot ice" or - as some of my male friends here say - "clever woman". There are also funny tautologies, like "supermegahypercool" and so on, often used in ads here. In pop songs, too.

Re: Which List Am I On?
Oxymoron or redundancy? I think we are talking about two different animals that aren't the same here.
Re: Which List Am I On?
Ha, a good question, Jason. Yes, oxymoron is definitely different from redundancy (tautology); the first word, IIRC, means "combination of incongruous or contradictory", while the second means "useles repetition"; but, not being a native English speaker, i cannot say for sure to which category "extrasuperfluous" belongs; at the very first glance, i thought it was closer to a tautology, but i ain't 100 % sure.

Jason...that avatar is quite Kafkaesque. Keep up the good work.
You are right; my "oxymoron" was actually re-redundant. I wll try to improve in the future.
