Crazy statistics

Post by sowhat »

I was having troubles trying to sleep last night, and for some reason i'm also so excited about the change — it doesn't feel the same now, but in a good way, — and so, something in my little head asked for statistics. But enough about me. The data may be slightly obsolete, but here it goes.
At the time of check, there have been 2036 members, 356644 posts, 22996 topics, and i counted the forum birth date by first member registered (not counting mr Guest registered back in 1970), so it has apparently existed for approximately 2650 days. Of course, that "statistics" doesn't take into account the days when the forum was locked for maintenance, posts and threads which have gone forever (and, unfortunately, members who have left), but here it goes.
Average of 0,77 members is registered each day.
Average of 134,6 posts made per day, 15,5 posts per topic.
Average of 8,7 topics started per day.
And we've got here an "average" 3/4 scale member (something that cannot exist for the reason alone that all the members are exceptional in their own way) who has posted 175,2 messages in all these years & started 11,3 topics.
Ehm. Sorry, guys and gals. As i said earlier, looks like Peter and Gil while doing their hard job of moving and improving the forum have built in some option that works on my brain in a strange way. Or, i might have caught that counting virus somewhere else.

Great analysis Sheena. You are right the place does "feel" different now. How can that be, it' exists only in cyberspace? Rational thought dictates that there should not be a "feel" at all. But.........it's there.

I agree, it does feel differant Brian.
It used to feel like our own private Rickenbacker home away from home.
Not it feels like any other forum in a way.

I don't begrudge the upgrade at all. Time marches on. But it does feel different.

But, hey, I used a wooden tennis racquet until the early 90s.

I agree, Brian, there is a feel here. But i guess it has more to do with people who are posting here than a particular cell in a cyberspace. And, as far as i am concerned - well, there have been, say, different moments in the years i've been a member here, but now i have a feeling the not-so-pleasant ones are finally buried in the past; and moreover, it's nice to see avatars and "put faces to names", so to speak. And after a few days, and with "old" color scheme, it doesn't even look that different from the old one.
Mark: i refused to use cell phone until 2004 and still think most of the best songs were written in the 60s. Talk about being conservative.

Speaking of Avatars how did you get such a good quality picture Sheena with the restriction that is placed on size? I tried uploading one last night but after I reduced it to the appropriate size it became too grainy (fuzzy).

BTW do you know if we also lost our automatic spell check feature? I have not noticed any corrections to the preview of my posts even when I have entered a typo.

Yeah, spellchecker is a great loss.
I used "Save optimized as" function in Adobe ImageReady, and jpegwizard.com (save thumbnail) may also work, albeit i liked IR result better. Not perfect, but good enough. :)

Thanks Sheena,

I'll have to try IR when I get a few minutes to spare.

Mark I even tried using the old colour scheme to try to recapture the "feel" of the old forum. It did help a bit but (and I can't rationalise why) the forum just feels different now. I know we (forum members) have not changed but the medium certainly has.

I agree it feels different. I believe it has to do with comfort level with the new look. I am trying to like it, but there is way too much info thrown at us when viewing the forum topic page, and also with each individual thread and post. I will get used to it, but it is hard to just read it casually. I did turn off viewing signatures to lessen the clutter.

I also tried the old look viewing of the forum but all it did was raise the frustration level, half reminding me of what it was like. Right now to ease finding new posts, I have it only showing the last 7 days, and newest posts first in a thread. Odd, but it as made it easier.

Not complaining, just sharing observations.

Somehow i did have a suspicion the statistics wouldn't get as much attention as the short mention of changes. Actually, as for me, i already got quite used to the new look and features, and it wasn't so hard for me. Probably because it's a bit similar to livejournal look which i am familiar with.

Sheena: I am not sure I understand what do you mean by 3/4 scale member.

You can change the order of the posts in thread in your profile.

Sheena: I am not sure I understand what do you mean by 3/4 scale member.
As i said in my first post to that thread, 0,77 members approximately get registered every day, about 3/4 of a member if we talk simple fractions.
As for why i am a "3/4 scale member" — i am smallish, about 5'1" (155 cm), and quite a while ago, after having seen a picture of me standing next to a big guy, some fellow forum member (don't remember who exactly) said i was 3/4 scale. :)

Call me crazy,,,but I think its the color.. I liked the "earthtone" color of the old forum better. This format seems kinda "sanitized"/ "cold".

I'm using the "old forum" color scheme from the very start. White & blue makes it hard to read for me.
