Few remember that he started as a curiosity doing HBO promos in 1984, in the still-infancy of HBO. After Warner bought the rights, they erased any media footprint of the character ever being in existence before the series itself and Network 23. Personally, I thought Amanda Pays was the hottest thing about the series! And what was it with those PC keyboards that always looked like 1905-era typewriters?

Perhaps to the producers it made the set look more sci-fi-ish. I haven't seen any of the shows for a great many years, I need to go look for them on DVD.
