Here is a close-up of the factory original nut on my '64 360/12, if you wanna see what the spacing was like...the picture was taken by the seller before I bought it and changed the strings, some were routed in a different way as you can see in the pic...

Re: Nut /string spacing on older 12s
Hi Guys
It's been a long time since I started this thread, and I haven't been back to check as often as I should have. My apologies. It's mainly because I decided to persevere with the fingering. Having come off an acoustic Guild F512, which is a monster machine (best acoustic 12 in the world IMHO), it certainly took some getting used to, Stanley.
However, I have just ordered a Ricknut ref 03327 from a UK dealer and am awaiting delivery (we have postal strikes spoiling the fun over here at present).
I still don't know if I have the nerve (or even the inclination, reading some of the above postings) to a: do it on my own or b: do it at all, but I will certainly compare sizes and spacings before I get the hammer out. It ain't gonna be pleasant messing with such a lovely instrument: all I want to do is play. Talking of which, I have to say that recording-wise, my 330/12 is astonishing. Even just DI-ing straight into the deck, it cuts through the mix and gives everything a lift, a beautiful brightness. Almost a 'wild, mercurial sound'...
Thanks to all for your contributions
Love and peace.

Re: Nut /string spacing on older 12s
Hi again
Have now received the new nut and with comes the puzzle(s).
It's matt, not shiny black as the original is on my '92, but what is more puzzling is that the slots, though thankfully wider spaced, are noticeably deeper at the headstock side than they are at the fingerboard side. In other words they slope upwards from the back.
Is this a fundemantal requisite of guitar design, or do I have a part problem?
(Don't know why, but I can't load photobucket pictures.)
Even so, and advice here?
Love and peace

Since the strings "slope" upward from the tuners on the headstock, the nut slots will be deeper on that side of the nut.
You can always remove that matte black nut and buff it out, if it's that important.
The first acoustic 12 I ever played (back in '67) was a Guild. Lovely guitar. Although Rick acoustic 12s are thinner on the ground than ever, they're a treat to play and have the most sweetly precise sound I've ever heard from an acoustic 12.

To load photobucket pictures, copy the link at the bottom of the thumbnail that says "direct image link" or the like. It starts out "[img]".

Many thanks Paul.
I suppose that was a bit stupid of me. Just wanted to make sure.
Now comes the hard bit...

Nothing "stupid" about it. We all learn new things in this place. It's one of the best things about visiting on a regular basis.
