thought i might try a set of Rotosound Jazz Bass flats, .45-.105. i have heard they are a higher tension string than
TI Jazz Flats, which i usually use in the .43-.100. set gauge.
would the Rotosounds be suitable for a 4001 neck? or, should i try the .40-.100 set?
thanks

Well, just my 2 pennies, but I have a light set of 77s on one of my Precisions, (lightest in fact, like .040 to .090ish) and even they're a bear to play, at least to me. If anything, I'd rank them as one of the tightest sets of flats out there. Even with the 4003 rod system, I think you'll be cranking them some to get the neck flat again. And I'm guessing they'd cause tailpiece lift in short order. Just me of course!

erk...thanks Fran, maybe i'll stick with the TIs. noticed the Rotos on sale and was considering giving them a try...
Re: Recommended Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 Gauges?
i was checking for gauges/tension for various strings, and was only able to find a few listed. i added the single string amounts to come up with an overall amount and came up with these findings. TI flats were the very lowest with an total tension of 140.19 lbs. next up was chromes set ecb80 (40-95) at 154.40. d'addario nickel half-rounds set enr70(40-95) was 154.60,followed by chromes ecb84(40-100) at 164.90. i couldn't find any tension info on rotosound's website, same for ghs, fender. my experience with ti flats were that they were too loose, and i tend to have a pretty light touch. i am looking to put a new light set of some kind on my 4000,after i replace my lifted non-intonating bridge with a hipshot. it seems most rotosounds are pretty higher-tension feeling, but i haven't found the facts listed to back up that impression. good luck.

Roto flats sound nothing like TI's or most flats for that matter, also I bought two sets and the G string was dead in both of them. Chromes have a nice sound if you want a slightly heavier gauge. I have owned at least 25 Ric basses over the years and have never had problems intonating them, tail lift belongs in the others under "topics completely beat to death then run over by a Mack truck, poisoned, stabbed and drowned"
