Ronny Earl is from my area. I was playing a few years ago and my guitarist brought in a funny looking guy with a hat and a big overcoat which he left on at the show. He asked if I would mind if someone played a few tunes with us, I said no bring him on up. This guy came up with his overcoat on sat down and started playing with us, I thought wow this guy is really good. A few tunes later he introduces himself and says Hi, I'm Ronny Earl. I said come on you you're kidding me right? He said no I'm not and proceeded to absolutely blow me away. Unfortunately the drummer wasn't a blues drummer at all so we really didn't come anywhere near his level. But he stayed up the whole set, he was actually apologetic, saying he wasn't a rock n roll player (was a rock n roll band mostly Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly stuff like that), very humble guy who is unbelievable on the guitar. He took my guitarist's guitar and made it sound completely different than it did in my guitarist's hands. (much better)
I had no idea he knew him, that was the only time I've met him and don't play in that band anymore.
That was my brush with greatness this decade. 8)

Yup, but that night he was playing a Gibson semi-hollow something or other through a white Fender Bassman and sounded great. That was a true story by the way.
