Richard: Thanks I could not have answered a Jeopardy question on KMC.
KMC, which comprises the company's entire Music segment, owns Ovation Guitars, LP and Toca hand percussion products, Gibraltar Hardware, Genz Benz Amplification, Hamer Guitars, and is the exclusive U.S. sales representative for Sabian Cymbals, and exclusive worldwide distributor of Takamine Guitars and Gretsch Drums. Privately held FMIC is the world's leading electric guitar manufacturer. In addition to owning the world-renowned Fender brand name, FMIC also owns Guild guitars, Charvel Guitars, Jackson Guitars, SWR Bass Amplification, Tacoma Guitars, EVH products, and is the exclusive worldwide distributor of Gretsch Guitars.

What suprised me was that the purchase price was only $117 million. I'm guessing that no real estate is included in the deal.

That money for all those companies seems more like an administrative headache than anything else, unless, of course, it makes them look more attractive for an eventual sale.

I think they have become the monster (CBS) they bought themselves out of in 1985!

Because we all love music, II'd love to be privy to the strategizing in the Fender Boardroom. They do keep getting bigger. I wonder if all their purchases are to hedge against the sales of one company going bust.

However, if in acquiring all these other guitar/instrument makers, I wonder they aren't setting themselves up for a big financial overextension.

It's a very common business mistake.
