I use allparts, mity-mite, schaller, seymour duncan, carvin, and others ... I have used some warmoth parts, but never their necks or bodies ...

I love the look of the Geddy Lee jazz bass ... but every one that I have played in a music store was substandard ...no where near the quality of an american jazz bass ... that's why I built my own ...

The problem is nothing seems to be as good as my Rickenbackers ...

here's one I built from leftover, rejected, damaged, cheap parts ... it actually looks and sounds and plays good ... the body has some big chips, dings and cracks ...

Thanks ... gee I left out my 2 guitars and my keyboard ...

The problem is when I go out to play I have the problem of which bass or basses to bring along ...

I am starting to like those emg active basses ... but the Ric's are still the best ...

It would be nice to add a 4003s8, 4002, 4004CII5, and a 4005 ...

YEah, I am very partial to my Spector 5 string with the active EMGs. Sweet playing guitar. Once I get the Rick redone, maybe that will change.
The bass of choice for this morning at church was the fretless Fender JAzz Bass Special. Felt like mixing things up a little bit ImageImage

I was thinking about getting a spector ... that one on the bottom sure has a lot of strings...

Neck-thru Spectors are really nice. It seems to hang perfectly on me unlike any of my other basses. The Fender is featherlight, the Rick is head-heavy and the Galveston is just ridiculous in every aspect. Yeah, it's got a lot of strings, about three more than I can play. (strung B to Bb) I actually use it at church when I need to play an intro to a song that should be on an acoustic guitar(our guitarists are very limited in their skills). It was rather cheap at $350. Looks great, sounds like **** and plays just a little better. THe pickups suck and the bridge is too far back. They are made in the same plant as Dean guitars (see: batwing inlays), and a guy in Ohio actually owns the Galveston guitar company. Very small, not really much to them. They make 7,8(unpaired),and 12 sting basses among other things.
All negatives aside, it is a really cool guitar and very fun and could be a great instrument with a little work. MY 4 month old son actually owns the Galveston. My other 4 months old son owns the Fretless Fender. I just play them until they get old enough!

YEah, I'm putting a stock p/u back in it. THe parts are on the way. THat Seymour Duncan has been in there since I got the Rick back in '91 and I've always played on the front pickup because the SD sounds like ****. Can't wait to hear another dimension of my guitar come to life.

Yeah, the p-bass is nice to have. A little different to look down the neck and see 4 pegs sticking up instead of 2. Unless I get a Hamer 12ver, the Spector will still be the primary axe of choice.

Scott,
Being the proud owner and player of a Hamer 12ver, if you are into that sort of thing, you will love it! Talk about low end and filling up space! I pull mine out and see people look at me like I am an alien or something, but once they hear it, they want to know where they can get one!
Having a Spector, have you played any of the OLP spectors? If so, how do they compare?

Well Scott, my 6 string Epiphone is a bit like your megastring bass. Though it's playable, it's quiet heavy, and the neck is way to wide for my comfort. The sounds are OK, I got it brand new for half the price ($600 instead of almost $1200), and it was a sort of pilot run to see if the model was commercial succesfull. Soon they stopped the Epiphone Expert series.

The most comfortable bass to play is my (dutch build) Catalyst Tigris bass, but all in all I love my 4003 best. The Tigris was about the same price, but it lacks some organic feel the Ric has.

I'm not looking anymore for the perfect bass, as I feel every instrument has it's own feel and purpose. This vision allows you to collect more LOL.
Beside owning 14 guitars and basses and my own homestudio, what do I want more?

I used to own a Spector NS pre-Kramer, back in the 80's. Great sound, loved the concave back, good for us guys with a bit of a gut, but couldn't get it to hang quite comfortably.

If I put it where I wasn't reaching down too far to make my right wrist and arm uncomfortable, my left arm and wrist was way away from my body when I played in the first three frets.

If I lowered the body to where I could pull my left arm in and down some I was reaching down to where my right arm was too stretched out.

I guess my arms were a little too short to be comfortable with it. I Got rid of it after about three years.

STeve: I haven't played any of the OLP Spectors. Probably because I don't know what OLP stands for. Also, because I've only played about two other Spectors. One did feel better than mine but it was top of the line and mucho $$$. I'm not well versed in a lot of different basses out there, just enough to be dangerous.

Robin: Can't agree with you more. EAch instrument has its own feel and purpose. I try to tell my wife that but she just won't buy into that theory. Image I want to get a 12ver and a Gibson Thunderbird to round out my 4, fretless4, 5, and unpaired 8 collection. One day in the future...right now I have buy diapers and formula for my collection of kids Image
