Fun Time
This should be fun and interesting.
I was on my way into work today and Deep Tracks is doing a Halloween program - songs related to the day. Magic was the theme right then and on comes "Do You Believe In Magic" by The Lovin Spoonful. That was the very first song I learned on bass way back in 9th grade, 1967.
So the question - what was the first song you learned on bass, and any incidentals you want to add.

Re: Fun Time
Well..... it was back in the 60s! Lazy Sunday Afternoon - Small Faces.
Re: Fun Time
We had decied to form a rock band on the Navy ship I was on. There were a few of us learning guitar, but since I knew bass clef from the trombone, I voulunteered for the bass. Got me a PI Fender P copy, and I think we learned CCR first, probably Bad Moon Rising or Lodi. I know it was NOT Green River!!!!!
Re: Fun Time
'I Feel Fine', 'cause it was one of two 45s my sister had of The Beatles that she bought new....I thought it was cooler than 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' which was the other one...

Re: Fun Time
Even before I heard Chris Squire, the bass solo in Deep Purple's Pictures of home just blew me away! Still does. Roger Glover had a great sound and style, almost sinister at times. It's no coincidence that all of my favorite bass player play Rics...
Re: Fun Time
I'm pretty sure it was Silly Love Songs. I didn't even own a bass yet(hadn't yet found the money under the bush) and would always play my friends' Mosrite bass when I was over at his house. He used to make me stop because I was figuring out stuff faster than him.
Re: Fun Time
Deep Purple, Into the Fire. My bass teacher (in 1975) was a classical violinist, who loved Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad.
Re: Fun Time
The first song I remember having learned was I'm Your Captain by GFR.
Re: Fun Time
Now that you mention it Jeffrey, that was one of the first I learned also.

Dazed and Confused.
(No, not me---that's the name of the song...)

Re: Fun Time
I remember learning the bass line to Silly Love Songs before I even had a bass. I played it on my guitar. When I finally had my 4003, that was one of the first things I played with it. It sounded better with the 4003!
Re: Fun Time
I remember it vividly. It was January 1978 and the song was "Rock And Roll All Nite" by Kiss
Re: Fun Time
Early 70's sometime....Hey Joe, Hendrix. On my very first bass....a black Kay.
No matter where you go, no matter what you do, there you are.

Re: Fun Time
Love Like A Man, Ten Year After (very easy bass line..!)
Re: Fun Time
I bought a J bass copy at a local music store in '79 and mom signed me up for lessons. I walked in first day and said I wanted to learn Roundabout because I liked it, not even knowing who Chris Squire was yet. Needless to say we settled on some nice major scales and eventually a Journey song, but I don't remember which one. I still don't know Roundabout even though I own a Rick and know who Squire is.
