Rush

Post by rickde »

So I got the Rush in Rio concert on DVD. Unbelievable. It is definately the best concert DVD I own. What was up with the laundry dryers on stage? Anyway, I know Geddy switched to Fenders on stage and I'm sure this has been discussed in here before, but why did he do it? Did anyone else think Lifeson did his best to show off how many guitars he owns? I think he used a different guitar for every song. I thought it was pretty cool Geddy never switched basses. In fact I didn't see him even fine tune his instrument through the whole show. YYZ was awesome!

Geddy has used his Jazzes live and the studio as well for years now, at least since 'Counterparts' was recorded....

Regarding the dryers: I believe Geddy pretty much just does direct into the PA these days, he doesn't even use an amp. So he needed... something... back there to fill up the space... Image

About the Fenders: I read an interview where he said that during the recording of Counterparts, the engineer, Kevin Shirley, convinced him to dig out the old Fender Jazz that he had played on Moving Pictures and play that on the album instead of his Wal basses. I wish he had convinced Geddy to break out the Ricks instead!

The last time I saw Rush in '98, there was a refridgerator on stage. Although, they did not pull out any cold beers out of it. LOL
I think they do this for a joke.

I have a Fender Geddy Lee bass. It's really not a bad bass at all, but the Ricky is better IMHO. The Ricky has a couple more pounds, and the notes sustsain much better. But for a Jap bass, it does have very good quality.

I saw the tour with the dryers (Saratoga NY). The funniest part was when a stage-hand took out stuff and put stuff in. I think they were towels. Hilarious!

When I saw Rush last year, the stage hands kept going on stage and putting quarters in the dryers to keep them going. T-shirts were tumbling during the whole concert, and at the end they opened up the dryers and tossed some t-shirts out into the crowd.

If you watch the DVD closely, he DOES change basses for 2112 because it is tuned down a whole step. He is playing the red Jazz bass on that part. So it was probably getting tuned while he played the red one. Alex has always used a lot of guitars, and some of them (like the 335) he brought for sentimental reasons to play on the old songs. I didn't see the doubleneck, but then again, they didn't do "Xanadu" or "Passage to Bangkok"!

He plays a third bass, a black J with a tortise pick guard, on "Driven". All of 'em sound great to me.

The only time I've seen Rush was in 1976 at a local skating rink, very primitive compared to Rio but still good.

As for the Rick making a 30th Anniversary appearance... isn't there some official Rush Website where the fans can put in a plea that might have a snowball's chance of getting to Geddy?

Does anyone know of such a cyber-site?
My first bass was a Rickenbacker...
My best bass is a Rickenbacker...
My last bass may very well be a Rickenbacker

Alvaro, if you head to:
http://www.rush.com/
enter the site and go to the bulletin board to post messages, it's been down a week or so, changing servers etc.. Start that plea, I'll be right behind you, with no new material to promote, we may see a song or two that needs a Ric, maybe even a 4080, bring back Xanadu!

Love those dryers. I want one of the tshirts from the dryers. I think someone from this forum mentioned they had coin operated dryers once and stage hands would have to come out and put more quarters in to keep them going. That is hilarious.

Just went to the Rush website. Some cool pics of Geddy with his Ric. If you go to Gallery and then 1980's Geddy is sporting a serious mullet.
