I was not a fan of Blues music for many years, but came to appreciate some of it in small doses over time.

It wasn't until I started playing guitar at 32 ( a late starter) that I realised that this simple music was so hard to play convincingly. I don't think I will ever be a competent blues player, but have learnt that the more you feel it the better you play it.

As for favourite artists you can include

I think Billy Gibbons is also one of the finest blues guitarists still alive. He is able to draw more mojo out of one note than most can in an entire tune. Perhaps got off the blues track for a bit to earn some moola, but still a great blues man. I'd love to take a lesson or two from him.

I love Roy!! Could someone tell me their favorite Anson Funderburgh (sp?) tune? So many like him, but I have a hard time liking him and Robert Cray.

It's like how I feel about Bonnie Raitt
I love her playing, but her vocals and songs in general seem weak when doing her own stuff. When she plays with John Lee, Muddy, etc., she really shines!!

Charlie, you should find a copy of Anson's first release Talk To You By Hand that was recorded on Black Top. Just as good as the first T-Birds record IMHO and I'm a huge Jimmie Vaughan fan. If you can't locate that one, look for either Sins or Live At The Grand Emporium, both with the late Sam Myers. Lastly, if you can stand the 60 cycle hum, find a copy of BlackTop Blues-A-Rama, Volume 1 - Live At Tipitina's . His solo on "Changin' Neighborhoods" is spot on early B.B. King phrasing with a cutting Strat tone. Live is the way you need to hear Anson - if you're ever in Dallas, go hear him for yourself at the House of Blues where he's holding a regular gig these days.

I know a lot of people who struggle with Robert Cray Charley but I love his voice, his songs & the way that his sound & style of playing make him instantly identifiable. I listen to Robert Cray a great deal.....

Ha, Ha....no way Peter. Strats are great gtrs, but not for me. I admire many artistes sounds that use one, but I found out very early in my career that Strat's don't suit me. No, it's the unrefined roar of a Telecaster that rings my bell....talking blues of course!

I'm a Gibby guy as well. Love the tone of a good set of PAFs coupled to a great resonant piece of mahogany. P90s do it for me as well, especially in an old archtop like an ES-350 or ES-5 or a hollowbody like an ES-330TD.

I was a Strat guy for over 17 years and like Tony, I found that my playing was better suited for a different guitar. I went back to Gibsons for Blues about 10 years ago. My first good electric was a '70 Tele and I've found that when it comes to Fenders in general, the Tele/Esquire is the better guitar for my playing style. I love the sound of a good Strat though!

Sorry man! Of course, the Rick sounds great, but I got my Dot Studio $225! I so want a peace sign decal like Al's, but.........it's been done. Got the Black Bigsby and the Pearly Gates knockoffs all ready to go in. I just can't decide whether to try myself. Fishing stuff out of the f-hole sounds scary!
