Shea Stadium "When Sports and Music Combine"

Post by congerz83 »

As some of you may know, after next season the coveted Shea Stadium will close it's doors and be dismantled. As a die-hard Met-fan, this brings me great sadness. What confuses me is that Billy Joel will reportedly hold a concert at Shea before the stadium closes. As I saw in another thread about a Paul Ringo re-union, what better place for one. I am a fan of Billy Joel, I will be there next year but, he has always seemed to be linked to the Yankees. I'm surprised nobody has approached Paul with this idea. I saw The Boss twice at Shea, and it would be a great location for such a historical event. The two remaing Beatles on stage, New York, re-creating the scene that began "stadium-rock". I hope something is in the works.

I saw the Mets take on my old Montreal Expos at Shea back in late September 1987, when the Mets were trying to catch the Cardinals in the N.L. East. (Mets finished three behind, and the Expos four, I think). Expos beat the Mets that night, much to my delight, and I appeared to be the only Expos fan in the stadium that night...which is pretty much how it was in Montreal too, for that matter.

Regardless; during that game, I couldn't stop thinking about the Beatles performing there and how that must have been.
As good as the game was, the ghost of the Beatles kept getting my attention.

That, and the fact I had to explain to my friend that we had to stand in a certain part of the parking lot, because there's where Eric Idle stood.

Yes, and there were a ton of jets flying over the place all game long.

For a cookie-cutter stadium, I will miss Shea.

Same here! It certainly has its share of charm and history. I'll be going to a lot of games next season.

I knew Yankee Stadium was closing, but I hadn't realized Shea was too. Where are the Mets going? My family and I are planning a trip to NY to visit both stadiums next May. We'll hit those stadiums along with Pittsburgh, and Philly. I'm trying to talk my lovely bride into Camden Yards and the new DC stadium. I may be asking too much! What do you think?

The Mets are not going anywhere. The new stadium is right next to Shea and the design is based on the old Polo Grounds. The new Yankee Stadium is next to the current stadium.

It'll be a shame to lose Shea.

The new Shea is based on Ebbets Field (brooklyn Dodgers), not the Polo Grounds.

I stand corrected. I did a between game exhibition at Shea during a double header in August 1967 and it is certainly a different perspective when you look up and see all those people up there.

If it makes you feel any better, I grew up a few miles from shea and used to watch a lot of games as a kid.
And I would have to hear every plane twice. Once when it went over the stadium and then again a minute later when it would fly over my house. On takeoffs, the engines would be so loud one could not hear the TV at all and even a conversation with a person five feet away was difficult.
And, as anyone who lives near a large airport knows, during the summer there would be planes taking off about every minute or two. Somehow that seemed normal to me at the time. But I don't miss it at all.

I will miss Shea. But the new stadium looks very nice. And the new Nationals stadium opens in 146 days! -

The Mets wont be moving into Citi Field until the 2009 season, so there's a bit of time left. It looks nice... shades of Ebbetts Field and more interesting than the old round Shea.

I say we resurrect John and George and have The Beatles do another concert.

So that means Eric Idle did his stand-up piece in The Rutles practically in the new stadium?

Really, when Shea Stadium goes to That Great Stadium In The Sky, I'll mostly remember the Rutles.

Shea, for all of it's history and "charm", is a friggin' dump. I, for one lifelong Met fan, will be glad to see it get smashed to bits. BUT...

I think some of us RRF NYM fans need to get together on going to a game next season. Anyone else down? :D
What do you mean the Bass is too loud???
