Prosperity Basses

Post by VRICKY63 »

I was thinking (smell something burning?) Do I really need a $2500 bass guitar ? I have a V63FG , 4004CiiFG , Zon fretless , 64 fender P , Fernandez 8 string , Godin A4 ,Martin B1 , and more ! I could sell the V63 and give the money to an animal shelter organization . I could sell all but 1 Bass and do something really charitable for somebody . Do I really need all these instruments and if not....can I let them go ? :?

I've never experienced that much guilt. I work hard for what I have. I also give time, money, and goods where I feel it directly impacts those I choose to help. Keep the basses or thin to your most used/needed/liked, but donate warm clothing to the homeless, volunteer at the soup kitchen, etc. instead of offing your collection.

I'm actually looking to thin the heard down to two (my 4004LK and a Wal 5 stringer)....I would consider this as the "necessities" for my needs. I, fortunately, have the ability to work side jobs for my toy money (basses, GN go fast goodies, video games, whatever) so i don't have much of a dillema about having some fun stuff in my life. I give a decent sum to a few animal organizations and my job affords me the ability to help people on a regular basis so I feel content.....which is all that matters. Do what you feel comfortable with and make choices/sacrifices for whatever will fulfill you the most. It's all a balance.

How about donating your basses to a worthy cause. Anyone have any ideas?

Brian, A WAL 5 String. I could slit my throat for selling mine.

My previous post was a tad misleading (unintentionally). I don't have the Wal yet.....it's my goal and when I finally locate one (the right one) I'll part with my two Laredos to partially finance it.

If anyone wants to donate a Ric bass to a worthy cause, I will gladly take your charity. I'm a one bass owner (4003, finally). I work at a small-town music store and make less than $20K a year (not much, but enough to get by as a single guy). So, if I can make anyone feel sorry enough that they'll give me another Ric, I will gladly stoop to that level.

I agree, just thin the herd, and put some money and clothing to some useful causes, inner peace and karma thats what it's all about!

Brian I'm sure your aware that Wal's are going to be made here again in the UK, as Pete has sold the business to an old employee. I'm still on the waiting list which is still going to be honoured!

Good luck, Ive had two in my life and regrettably got rid of both.

Welcome James, my Rick addiction is coming a long fine with two 4004's, a Cheyenne and a Laredo, now where is the 2060FG and 4004FG to add to them???

I contribute in a small way to various charities (mainly animal ones) on a regular basis and I often struggle with the same issue. I still have my basses but I do feel pangs of guilt at the contributions I could make if I sold most of them (not that I have lots, but I have a handful). I wish I could say I'd done the more decent thing, but so far I haven't. Unfortunately there are certain things I feel I need in my life to give it purpose (and me pleasure), and my guitars are most of those things. I don't own much else of any monetary value, not even a car. Doesn't make me feel any better though.

If you always make sure that if you have a family & mortgages etc,and that everything is paid for and you have saved for a bass then don't feel guilty. From what i have read on this subject a lot of you give to charity which is very comendable, and if you have stayed in and saved your money to treat yourself good for you.

Even if you sold your basses and gave all the money away it would never solve the problems, and you would wish that you still could have done more Catch 22.One thing you have to remember is that if you bought the basses new then you are in a small way helping someone to keep their job,and as with everything something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

My 1964 Hofner Violin bass cost me £175, 19 years ago and now i guess it's worth £1'500+ even though i don't use it now i never feel guilty about owning it.
My Girlfriend saved up for my 1992 Ricenbacker 4003 but she did'nt fall behind on any bills etc in saving for it.

The bottom line is that if you have saved to buy your collection of basses, and it gives you a lot of happiness and your loved ones and bills etc are taken care of and you can still give money to Charity then your a better person than you thought you where.

I just have one. One each, that is: 1 '67 4005WB Jetglo, 1 March '73 4001 Mapleglo, 1 July '73 4001 Fireglo and only 1 '98 4001V63 Fireglo! Not to mention only one each '01 730L/12 and '07660 DCM. See, it is possible to only have one (of each)!
