1958 Combo 400 Restoration

Post by fab4 »

Hello All,

It has been a while since my last post and I must admit the new forum looks amazing!!! After a very long time I want to thank Paul for the tremendous work he did on my '58 Combo 400. When I saved it from the scrap heap it was a sorry little guitar and I thought that I would work on it. Well that never happened and I sent it to Paul and he worked his magic on it. My plan was to keep it on the wall and play it occassionally but the more I played it the better i liked it. I now use it as my regular guitar and it has far passed my expectations. I have received numerous compliments on the sound and most people are amazed at the condition of the guitar. It's funny that not many people have seen a Combo 400 in action and they are intriqued by the body shape and gold pickguard and TRC. Paul who would have thought that almost 50 years later this little guitar is still rocking!!!! Thanks again for bringing it back from the brink of dismay.

Thanks, Len. It was a fun project, especially re creating the Alodined aluminum pickguard, which is a dead ringer for the original guard and is probably wearing like one, too, and looking pretty glitzy.

I did my best to give you a good setup and did quite a bit of fiddling with it before I was happy with sending it back to you, and it's immensely gratifying to hear that it's been your regular player!

Paul is really downplaying the hard work that went into this restoration - the handcrafted pickguard and the bridge cover are to original specs and you really can't tell the difference. My expectations were definitely exceeded!!! I'll post some pics as soon as my home computer is working again !!!!
