Phil - i use Rotosounds at 45 -105 - same guage and tensioning as all other stainless roundwounds ive tried , ernie ball etc. I use 40 - 105 on my old 4001 because it cant handle the tension. And the basses i see in shops that im comparing to are properly set up because i played and checked them all as i can judge the relief by the gap at the 12th fret.

Owen, the Rotosounds I tried were those nylon wrapped thingies that Paul McCartney used in the 70's. I went back to Fender Light Flatwounds the next payday.

A lot of the new basses have a high action in the shops so that fret buzz doesn't scare off customers, I guess.

On another note, Eden Electronics is not shipping Nemesis amps since they were bought by U.S. Music Corp. Those are the same folks that bring us Washburn and Randall, the darling duo of the heavy metal crowd. We'll see what the acquisition does to Eden. Actually, Randall has one of the neatest combo amps I ever saw. You can switch out modular tube preamps and make it sound like 16 different classic guitar amps. They ain't just heavy metal anymore! My brother had a Randall and it was impossible to blow up. The previous owner was Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, and he couldn't blow it up either. My brother also used a Washburn (Les Paul copy), and it was a good guitar.

I was really wanting that Nemesis NC-210P combo. 225 watts, 2x10 + horn, 47#, 100db efficiency, 35hz-15kHz, $595. It WAS made in Minnesota where some folks still have a work ethic. I hope Illinois production doesn't trash the quality and raise the price. Don't know of any other combo that compares, regardless of price (Ampeg Portabass? Mesa Walkabout? But they ain't combos.). Bass Central gave an earliest ship date of March. Maybe. I'll have my money ready, and maybe the 4004 will have a straight neck too.

Also, James Funk has reintroduced an improved Gibson BH420(?) bass head as the ThunderFunk. Saw one on eBay and checked it out. Looks nice. It may be a real sleeper.

I think flatwounds can be set a little lower than rounds of the same tension and gauge without fretbuzz.
