Do v63's get the "vintage" tone?

Post by jazzstick »

In my research in getting another ric It seems that the C64 has more of the treble punch than the v63. is this a correct/fair assessment?
I love the classic ric tone and not so much the 4003 without the cap. So is the C64 a better match for me?

Thanks

The V63 can get the tone, also.

to me the 4001v63 and the 4001c64 and both really "Modern" basses that are made to resemble the old 60s 4001 basses. But in my opinion they are actually closer to a modern 4003 in the way they play and the way they sound.

My V63 set up with a Hipshot bridge , Adjustable pole high gain bridge pickup and Fender flats nails Macas Sgt Pepper , Penny Lane etc tone.
It's too early in the morning to talk about our relationship !

Doesn't Francesco use a v63 in some of his videos? It certainly has "the sound" IMO.

Amen Brett! I put two .0047 uF caps in series in my 1998 4003 to get closer to the way my '82 4001S sounded (which is my avatar). Since the 4003 has more bottom end, I've been more than happy with the 4003 sound now as I blend both pickups.

The 4003's built in 1998 still did not come with the good old .0047 uF cap, so I wasn't very happy with the sound till I did that "2 cap" mod (which cuts the capacitance in two for more roll-off). Everyone is different though and many don't like the "vintage tone" and bypass the cap. Not me though.

The Horseshoe on my V63 sounds very different than the high gains on the 4003 basses I once had. I put a ,0047 cap in my V63 and I prefer the sound over the 4003. Anyway, I haven't got experience with a real 4001 '63, so I'm not sure if my v63 sounds "vintage".
The v63 has 500k pots, so it should give enough treble punch..
