Power amp choices for bass

Post by bassman2k »

What are some things to look for in a good power amp for bass? It seems like the lighter digital ones wouldn't handle the low frequencies as well as ones with massive transformers. Is this true? What brands are good for bass applications? I hear a lot of good things about QSC and Stewart. Stewart seems to have the best watt:dollar ratio. The Stewart World Tour 1.2 delivers 1200 watts @ 4 ohms for just $600.

I'm using a Yamaha P5000 running into two 8 ohm cabs which gives me 2 x 500w. I've not experienced any lack of depth or control over the deep stuff and it also copes just fine with the low B on my 5 string which I sometimes use.

It's a great 2U poweramp with some nice extra features, it includes a low pass filter on each channel (variable from 25-150Hz) and has a switch to introduce some extra deep sub-by rumble if you want it which works much better than I expected. Only weighs 12Kg too.

Regards,
Steve.

I used to have two World 1.2 amps. They are very nice but do tend to run pretty warm so leave 1 rack space above it. My only criticism is the high end can sound a bit harsh, but for your application the amp will sound fine. I only noticed the harshness when I tried the amp in my stereo system. The amp is analog, only the power supply is "digital". Having said that, my Walter Woods Electracoustic amp is all "digital" and sounds great with a lot of bottom end extension.

I started out on the cheap, with a 100 wt/ch Radio Shack stereo power amp on sale, and haven't yet found the need so spend more.If it comes to regularly needing more power then I'll have to get something bigger.(Did I mention that I'm a frugal spendthrift?) :D
