Ric_o_Sound switchbox?

Post by gothbin »

Has anybody ever attemted to build a sort of a splitterbox for Ric-O-Sound, which is able to switch between stereo and mono in order to get a second amp for overdriven sounds, and one for clean, and when only needed clean that two PU's can send it's signal to one amp?

Would be neat ain't it? Or am I nuts? LOL

Actually I'm still thinking of quad-ro-sound ... splitting the signal 4 ways and putting 4 amps in each corner of a room and sitting in the center and going wow!!!

Actually as I joke about this I must seriously mention that there are quadrophonic PA systems ... I saw Pink Floyd back in the '70's doing Dark side of the Moon and they had a quad PA ... it was truly impressive ...

Geddy Lee splits his Signal 3 ways from his Sans amp and goes direct into the PA ... one signal is normal, one is more bass and one has distortion ... The sound man the mixes the three ...

I usually play through one amp that has one input and I use the bass pod as a tone shaper/preamp ... and then I mike a cab with a sm57 into a big pa ...

Funny, I use a SM57 to record my bassrig, together with direct sound sometimes. For life use, I think I'm going to try, and maybe buy the new Audio Technica Kickdrummicrophone with two capsules inside. One is Low freq. and the other high freq. and is (yes, I can't help it!!! LOL) splittet, but due to the close positioning of the capsules, it lacks phase problems.

Unfortunaly, most so called FOH engineers over here in The Netherlands want to DI a direct (Not even from the amp you use....) signal from the bass, as they think bassplayers aren't able to think/decide over their own sound. It's sad to live overhere......sniff sniff.

I also like to use EV kick/broadcast mic's for bassrigs.

Anyway, I get my dremel out tomorrow, make space and routings for two additional PU's in my 4003. One will be a Musicman HB extra at the bridge, and a special tripplewound mega P-Bass in between the two original PU's in order to get direct quadraphonial sound from my rigg. I will use a special Neutric 5 pin XLR to connect it to a custom-chromeplated-goldlettered-splitterbox. This will draw attention on stage I guess for the girzzzz........hahahahahahaha

I use a kick drum mic for my bass rig. I am running a 1-18", 2-10" cabinet and the bass drum mic works very well. I have miked it up as long as I have been playing, but am starting to mess around with DI'ing it into our live mixer.

Actually I am using a Peavey cab. I am considering buying a new one and was wondering what a lot of people on the forum recommend.

I saw Pink Floyd in '73 for the DDOTM tour. Great show and the quad PA was a very nice treat too. I liked the gong that lit on fire, did you see that?

Don't worry Robin a lot of engineers here stil also think that a bass player is not capable of getting a good sound out of his amp. I've surprised more than one engineer at how good a miked bass can sound. They all say we won't get enough bottom out of a mic, which is BS. Even a 57 or 58 is flat down to 50 hz. which is about a low G on your bass and they drop off gradually so that E is still there, I don't know about 5 string players, they may have to use those kick drum mics. What do you use Jeff for a mic? That is a good idea I have been sauying I'm going to buy one for a coule of years now.
