A momentous occassion in my life (Chapter II)

CHAPTER II

An ALL BLACK RIC BASS being sold by Yofa, the seeker of cash! It was exactly all I had ever wanted in the Ric of my dreams. It was in excellent condition, it wasn't just a Shadow or a Blackstar (which were very close to what I wanted but not exactly what I wanted even though they are even rarer), it had it all, and so, upon wiping the tears from my eyes, the drool from my chin and chest, and the feces from my underwear, I did what I had to do...click 'Buy It Now'. As I read those glorious words of "Congratulations! You are the winner!", I experienced a surreal moment of disbelief followed by a longer moment of "MY WIFE IS GOING TO KILL ME!" I got over that pretty quickly actually. I waited for a very long 5 days followed by a much longer 48 hour temperature stabilizing period here in my house after it arrived. And then my friends, just moments ago, with Geddy The Great playing "The Trees" on my computer sound system in the background, I opened that sweet case and I gazed upon her with mine own eyes for the very first time. Words cannot describe the shear excitement and joy I experienced as i saw that it is as awesome as I dreamed all these years. The appearance, the feel, the acoustic sound w/o amplification were all too much for me to take. It was truly worth the wait.

And so my fellow forumites, yesterday we were mere acquaintences, but today we are brothers! I am honored to be counted among you and I will always uphold the standard which you have set as precedent before me. Although they all look different in their own way, reflecting the personalities, minds, and hands that make them sing night after glorious night, they all share the same heart. A heart of excellence, beauty, craftsmanship, and sonic superiority.

You may be asking yourselves, what will become of this new brother's namesake? Will we now call him "Rickful"? No my fellow Fender crushers! In memorium of my long journey and quest for the great RICKENBACKER BASS so as to never take for granted this blessing that God has allowed me to have, I will remain know as...crank the reverb and echo...RICKLESS!!!!!!!!!

...I know...I can't believe I just sat here and typed all that either. I need to go to bed. The bass is awesome though. THUMP!!!

Hey, hey! Jon, I loved every word of your story. You know, it pretty much describes how I felt back in late 1979, when I picked up my first Rickenbacker bass, a 2nd hand Fireglo 4001 made in December 1972. I no longer have it (stupid me!), but other Rickenbacker basses have taken its place. Currently I own a 1979 Azureglo 4080, a 1980 Burgundyglo 4001, a 1976 white 4001, a 1974 Jetglo 4001 and a 1970 21 fret Fireglo 4001. Also, an all black (but with white binding) 1974 4001 I ordered from the States about a month ago should be here very shortly. Rick on!

Congratulations Jon, I also think the all black Ricks are cool. Black on black with white binding and chrome hardware. Unless something out of the ordinary falls out of the sky, that will be my next Rickenbacker. Try to post some pics.

When I went to the music store that sold me my first RIC, my mouth started drooling when the salesman walked out of the warehouse with it. I do know the feeling all to well, Jon. I think I speak for all of us here when I say that we "Ricknuts" all feel like that!!!

Yeah got that feeling MANY times!

Temp aclimation not withstanding-it is often prudent to ask the seller if he/she would be willing to wait that long before accepting a return.

Often with ebay BIN the seller "neglects" to mention that crack along the neck that's only in the clearcoat.

I've had those too. Magical Malox Moments...

Congratulations and welcome, Jon.
You made me think back to the day I got my 1st RIC bass (and 1st bass in 12 years) last year, a "new" '98 4003 FG that stayed in the storage room of a music shop for 4 years before being sold to me. I had went through troubles and anxiety to get her. When I finally did get her and opened the case, a brand new world opened for me. It was the start of another musical journey...

Now I have 3 RIC basses and and I want a lot more!

Rickless: A terrific story. It is amazing how time flies when talking about a Rickenbacker. Welcome to The Rickenbacker Forum and as you can see from the responses, you certainly have touched the hearts of many with your thoughts.

That's exactly how I felt when I told the seller (a former Rick Forum member) that I had to have her. Though she has not arrived yet, I know for sure that her wiring harness is totally stock except for one of the four volume/tone controls, which is to say that the treble-pass cap is still in.
