I just had one break on my 88 360/12 RI that the PO had put on. I don't think the tailpiece itself broke, but more like the thick chrome plating came off.
Took my guitar out about a halfstep during a gig.
Fortunately the PO also had purchased a trapeze tailpiece, so I replaced the R with it. It looks better IMHO.
I checked the tailpiece on my 81 360/12, and it appears to be developing a crack as well...
My 99 360/12 that I had recently purchased had the R tailpiece snap just before the PO sold it.
At this point I've got a perfect record :D

There is no such thing as a 12-string trapeze tailpiece, right? You just put both e-strings throught the first hole, etc..?

I've had several Ricks. I've only seen one broken "R." That was off of a 60's 12 string convertible. To me, the trapeze tailpiece looks "un-finished" or home made... Plus, I play 360s and it just doesn't look right with the rounded top edges...
