Do you own a guitar not made from wood?

Post by blazer »

I guess that Guitars made from alternative materials have a stigma of being less than an instrument than ones made from the most ornate woods. But this isn't always the case, take for example the Danelectro guitars made from pressed hardboard, or the Ampeg Dan Armstrong plexiglass guitar or the Valco airline guitars made from plastic and I haven't even mentioned Ovation yet.

So do you guys have guitars that aren't made from solid wood?
In my own case, yes I DO have guitars that aren't made of wood. And here they are.

My strats are both 1989 Squier stratocasters and they are made from Plywood, nevertheless they sound really good and play like butter, they are treasured favorites from my extensive collection

I've got an old Dano convertible - Formica top and back and Masonite sides, IIRC.

I have a bass with a Swamp Ash/Spalted Maple body, but it does sport a graphite neck.

Some wood, some plastic and some air. Plays nicely and doesn't sound half-bad.

Pop out the neck and it should say at the end when it was built. And if your serial number starts with an S it means it was built by Samick, if it starts with a Y it was built by Young Chang and if it starts with an E it was built by ESP

I didn't know that Squier bodies were made out of plywood, but I guess it stands to reason, as some of the really cheap Epiphones are made out of plywood as well.

I have a Silvertone, which is made out of Masonite, et cetera.

Well CURRENT Squiers are made of alder, but in the late eighties that was not the case.

I recently picked up a "97 Reverend Commando and like it quite well. As I understand it, it's basically a plastic on formica body with a block of mahogany though the body. Maple neck and rosewood fretboard. Lipstick at the neck and humbucker at the bridge. Coil tap on the 'bucker.. Plays great, sounds good, just like a guitar should.

I have an SQ series Squier Strat, circa 85 or 86. I was always under the impression that it was made of wood, but who knows what's under all that black paint. I aslo have an early 90's Epiphone that I am fairly positive is made of plywood.

i own a recent-vintage danelectro hodad bass, and it's one of my favorite instruments, with a great feel and a really unique hollowbody sound. i have had graphite-neck basses in the past,as well as one of those dan armstrong clear plastic basses.
