Never a great thread to begin with, it further deteriorates, to sink finally into ignominy...

I can't call a pickup replacement "Butchering" certainly not when it's done neatly, which from what I can tell from the pictures is the case here.

"Butchering" in my opinion would be installing a Floyd Rose and making the cavity by chopping away the wood with a flat screwdriver and a hammer.

Believe me, I've seen guitars that had been modified that way.

I share your comments on the P-90 Stan, it was a great pickup for me to see you back. :D
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I am the guilty party.......

A few years ago, I picked up a non-working Dakota (cheaply). I had some Rio Grande P-90's laying around, and was looking for a good platform. I also wanted to experiment with the Torres deluxe varitone (that's what it really is, not as described in the listing; basically a bunch of different value capacitors and/or coils selectable by the rotating switch). It actually sounded pretty good; but ultimately, my experimentation completed, I eBayed it; not sure any more if the current seller is the one I sold it to.

I do have a "normal" Dakota (and too many other guitars...); I think it's a great guitar, and certainly one of the best values in the guitar world.

Varitone, eh? Sounds like the "Decade" knob on my low-impedance '70 Les Paul Personal.

It's not butchered, but I don't see why someone would want the P-90s over those great Rick humbuckers.

Because P-90's sound so goldy, they must sound good in a Dakota too... right?

now that I know they fit... I'll take one of each!

SD sells P-90's in toaster shells... wonder what they're like....

Tom,

I e-mailed the seller at the time of the auction, asking about the mods. Although he explained how it was wired, with the varitone and all, he couldn't answer me about the pickups. Which P-90s did you install on it (if you recall): Jazzbars or Bluesbars or a combination thereof? (...in case it shows up on eBay again  )

It was the combination set if I remember correctly (90% certain). They are pretty good, but I have a LP DC Special with Fralins -- those are to die for.

They didn't really fit; I know I had to route the cavities deeper, and I think a bit longer as well.

Either way, the job was done cleanly and professionally, not butchering at all.

Sorta like Lennon's 59 junior with a Charlie Christian Neck pickup... would you call it butchered?

Or Ry Cooder's stratocaster with a replacement bridge and pickups pulled from a Teisco solid.
