Songs about the evil part of doing drugs

Post by blazer »

Sex, Drugs and Rock N roll that's the essential catchphrase from our favorite type of music and many songs have been written about those topics. But let's talk about the songs that shed a light on the negative aspects of Drugs.

I'll start with "Heroin" by the Dutch band Doe Maar. This song came to be when their drummer Renee Van Collum got addicted to heroin and they witnessed firsthand how destructive it can be.

Some that come to mind would be "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground. Not necessarily the "evil" part per se, but applicable. Also, "Cold Turkey" from John Lennon. I'm sure that I'll figure up some others too, but those leap to mind.

Whiskey bottles and brand new cars;
oak tree you're in my way.
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you.

CHORUS-
Ooh, ooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, ooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you.

Yeah.
Angel of darkness is upon you.
Stuck a needle in your arm (you, fool, you)
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose,
one more drink, fool, would drown you. (hell, yeah)

CHORUS

Now they call you prince charming.
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes.
Say you'll be alright come tomorrow, but
tomorrow might not be here for you. (yeah, you)

CHORUS

Aw, you, fool, you.
You stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before.

One little problem that confronts you,
got a monkey on your back.
Just one more fix, Lord, might do the trick.
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks. (hell, yeah)

CHORUS 2x

Oh, you, fool, you
Don't stick those needles in your arm.
You're just a fool, just a fool, just a fool.

Pete: I've got to disagree with your choice of "White Rabbit". I don't think it was ever intended to depict the evils of drug abuse. Although some people might find its numerous references to "Alice In Wonderland" imagery as nightmarish, I think many more might find them intriguing. The lyrics also seem clearly to be encouraging the use of drugs for mind expansion. While we know they were probably promoting the use of so-called soft drugs like psychedelics, they don't differentiate between those and more dangerous hard drugs. In summary, I doubt anyone was ever dissuaded from drug experimentation as a result of listening to "White Rabbit".

Amphetamine Annie - Canned Heat "But Annie kept on speeding, her health was getting poor, she saw things in the window, she heard things at the door, her mind was like a grinding mill, her lips were cracked and sore, her skin was turning yellow"

Red Hot Mama, Red Hot - Humble Pie "Your mother's still in Memphis on a cocaine farm
There's no place left to shoot it in that thing she calls an arm."

Hi Mike,

I'm not all that far from your mom's place; my place is between Los Coyotes and Studebaker, just above Wardlow

I couldn't take it no more. You might think you're flying baby on those little pills, but you ought to know you're dieing, cause... Speed Kills!

Great song Mike!

How about Casey Jones by The Dead?
