Only after you posted that it was and I went back and counted. Wonder what ever happened to that bass?

Hello, does anyone know the production figures for the 21 fret 4001. I have been using mine for 36 years now and wouldn't trade it for any other bass. I am a full time Amp & Guitar Tech by day and semi pro musician by night but I have yet to see another 21 fretter in the United Kingdom. Were they exported at all or just for the USA market. Any information would be welcome. The date lettering is JK*** ,Thanks, Phil.

Welcome Phil! Not sure about production numbers but we'd love to see some pics! That'd be a November 1970.

You would be surprised just now many 21-fretters were exported to Europe! My 4001 FG 21-fretter (pictured below) came from Germany, is bone-stock, and is a true 10 out of 10 condition bass. It was simply rarely played and has not a single scratch of any kind on it. It is an early January 1970 model, JA*** . I know of two more, both in Lisboa Portugal, a Sept 1970 and a Nov 1970. Both were originally owned by Sergio Silva, although he sold one to a friend last year. His remaining bass, Jaclyn, is a color and finish twin to my Susanna.

My friend Chris Squire in London had one, a MG, in 1970, and it is pictured on his "YES Album" from a January 1971 cover photo for the March 1971 release of the album. My first Rickenbacker was a brand new March 1971 eggplant-burgundy 4001 21-fretter, purchased by me in New Orleans LA (USA) in April 1971 during my early history as a professional musician for years in New Orleans.

Recently, one was sold in Australia, and I know of several still in the UK today.

PLEASE post photos of yours! If you need help getting high-resolution versions posted, just email-attach the raw photos to me and I will be glad to post them for you, and tell you in detail how I did it so you can post more yourself at any time you wish in the future. My email is <elys AT elysrand.com> (replace the " AT " with "@" of course)

Welcome Phil,

I nearly bought a MG 21 fret bass also with a JK *** serial number five years ago in South London. So, I know there's that one out there, not far from you, and I'm still looking for it!

It's probably the twin to your bass.

Most of the production went to Europe from what I've seen over the years, the domestic US market is seemingly thin on the ground. This was a slow time for the factory and bass production was relatively low at that time. 21 fret basses can be seen from late '69 until early '71 from what we have seen, including examples with ebony fretboards.

Please post a few photo's!

Cheers,

Andy

"Jaclyn" is JK 340. 8) As for the picture of Peter Cetera playing a 21 fretter, I'm afraid I've missed it so far. I'll be sure to find the December issue of Bass Player locally. And yes, I used to own a further 21 fretter, an August '70 (JH 265). Cheers.
