Re: Atomic Amps:The Next Big Thing?
They've been around for quite a while, Mitch (3 years I think). I have a second generation AR112-50 (6L6 based) and I love it. This amp is LOUD!!
There is a great review of them here http://forum.thestompbox.net/showthread.php?t=4631. I have used mine with my desktop Tonelab (slides right into the docking bay) as well as with a Behringer tube preamp and some foot pedals into the loop return. I love the tone of this amp (no coloration), although it took me a long time to get it useable at gig volumes with the Tonelab. I have used the left line out form my AD120VTH to the loop return on the Atomic and ran it in parallel with the AD120. Serious ear damage potential there, but it sounded good.
I like the flexibility. Use an amp modeler, an effects modeler, use a preamp and pedals, or just as another amp for more power or better stage sound distribution (my AD212 cab is highly directional and the AR112 helps fill out the other side). I originally bought this as a backup rig for my AD120 (I already had the Tonelab). Since getting a handle on the settings with the TL, I now use this combo for smaller jams and at home. Good tube dynamics at reasonable volumes (not low!), and also to fill out stage sound on larger venues.
