Proceed w/ caution on this 4005 listing

Post by brycycle »

noticed this seemingly good deal on ebay. the description sounds extremely familiar to an old auction - i've asked for a specific photo to prove that the auciton is legit.

I remember seeing this picture and the copy before, too, but it seems like a loooong time ago. What stood out for me then and now was the tung oil refinish...the auction has none of the signs of a hijacked account; he seems to occasionally sell and it's high-quality stuff. He might be right on target as far as price goes...this player will take a couple of grand plus to restore for a collector, and then you're right in $7500.00 territory.

OK, maybe he's a bit low...

But it looks legit to me.

Maybe it never had it Phil, just like the "S" basses at the time.

Thanks, Phil. It bears none of the signs of hijackers, but seems like there are still some hijackers who keep things subtle...

I've seen another 4005 without neck binding. The markers are in fact short lengths of plastic rod, 1/16" in diameter by about 1/4" long, inserted through the binding into the 'board itself. The binding, being thin, often goes south when someone starts sanding away on the sides of the neck. Another possibility is that chemical stripping of the original finish ate the binding, and it was then removed and the very slight ledge (or "rabbet") in which the binding is slotted at the bottom, was sanded away, leaving the dots in place.

Ebay has a new Security Key thing that makes it impossible to hijack an account. You type in your username and password, then it takes you to a screen to enter your 6 digit code. You get this 6 digit code from a little device you keep on your key chain. You press the button and it displays a code. The code changes every 30 seconds. Ebay somehow knows what code YOUR device should display at the time of login.

So then, how'd this happen? I've seen the security code thing for a couple of weeks now when corresponding with fellow E-bayers...
