620 with humbuckers?

Post by brianeharmonjr »

I'm missing the tone of my Dakota and am seriously considering putting some Ric humbuckers in my 620. Has anybody had experience with a 620 with humbuckers? Is the tone similar to a 650D? Should I do the swap or just wait until I can afford to buy another 650D?

I was also thinking about just trying one in the bridge position and leaving the high gain in the neck.

I'm sorry to say that I haven't compared it to the SH or to my high-gain equipped 620 ... too many guitars, too little time! (Oops! That's someone else's line! :))

I've had HBs in my 360 for over five years :) and would drop them into a 620 in a heartbeat. Now, if I could only find myself a lefty 620.

I think a 620 with humbuckers would sound a little bit different than a 650 simply because of how the pick-ups are mounted. In the 650, they're recessed into the body as opposed to being mounted on top of it. That said, I don't think you'd be displeased with the sound at all. I'm a big fan of those Ricbuckers. I think they sound great.

Oh, and don't forget to consider changing the pots to 500K. I think the standard pots are 250K and I'm told they can smother the tone a little bit.
