Why Does Bass Forum Traffic Dwarf All Others?

Lemmy has stuck with Ric much longer than CS and GL.

Let's be realistic shall we... Lemmy hasn't a clue....Never did! Geddy is damn good but no one that I know of has been playin' a Rick bass as long and as well as CS!

Oh yeah....We Rick bass players have the largest horns too.

I think Lemmy has a unique style and a great tone, actually I'd much rather listen to him than either of those two guys who although great are also very predictable and too clinical for me.

I think that it's just that when folks mention "Rickenbacker" they will think first of "bass". The traffic on this site perpetuates that...Truthfully, I think the versatility of the Rick bass is the key. While it's hard to compare my fretless J to my 4004 and 4001, I have no problem playing any style with the Ricks. I guess that could be said about a J or P bass too...

But my favorite 6 string is by far my 66 Fender Mustang. I try to love my Dakota, but it really isn't as good an intrument. I would guess a Fender forum might have reversed traffic due to the success of the Stratocaster.

I don't know Ed, there are quite a few Fender bass players too.

No doubt, but I think in proportion there are more Fender guitarists than Rick guitarists. OK, so maybe a Fender forum would be split 50/50, but I think that Rick has made it's reputation with basses.

Rickenbacker meant "guitar" to me and a whole (admittedly older) generation of players, long before it meant bass. Those of us who were active back to the mid-sixties think "guitar", whereas the Rick bass gained its peak of visibility for a lot of slightly younger players and fans, beginning in the '70s.

I think it's a case of more basses=more players=more words spoken and written about the Rick bass. It's numbers.

Speaking as a bass player and one who was around back in the 60s (Beatle fanatic), Rickenbacker meant guitar to me also, and even though I was aware Paul got a Rick bass, it was the Hofner that was the mental association with him. It wasn't until CS came along in the very early 70s in the US that the Rick bass became a big part of the awareness.

I am reminded of UK groups in the 1960s who popularized the Rickenbacker bass to a degree, including Pete Quaife of The Kinks and Pete Townshend of the Who, for example.

See, I wasn't aware back then that those two played Rick basses. We heard the Kinks music in the wilds of SW Michigan but got no info. The Who never did it for me so I paid no attention. Yeah, I know, heresy. Oh, I did really like and owned Tommy.
